So the BJA have made Kata mandatory for all persons wishing to go from 2nd to 1st kyu.
What do we think about that?

To be honest it's about time this happened, kata is an integral part of judo and should never have been optional.

Do you mean the full nage no kata as tori and uke?

Just the first set for 1st kyu but the whole set is needed for 1st Dan.
    I'm not happy tbh

I've just checked the BJA site and little appears to have changed, still just 1 set of NNK for 1st dan. Entire NNK for Technical 1st dan. Do you have a link for the changes?

    Hi Stu,

Why are you not happy? I think I can guess but just wondering.

We have had to do sections of NNK for 2nd as well as 1st kyu for years now.

Full NNK for either Junior Black (1st kyu) or shodan.

I dont understand why it would be a problem tbh - Esp as you say just 1st series? That is very easy to learn and do. Whats the problem?

Ok so I was one of the “Anti Kata” brigade but you know what, we did the seoi nage part of Nage no kata in my last class and I actually found it useful. Due to my height seoi nage has never been a favourite of mine but the momentum caused by uke attacking me gave me all the Kuzushi I needed to throw him quite easily, despite my uke being considerably shorter than me. My latest post on my blog from a guest writer who was also present at my last class refers.

I set of NNK used to be optional for 1st kyu but its now a requirement . Also, most of the leg grab techniques have been removed from the 2nd kyu grading. See attached http://www.britishjudo.org.uk/kyu-grades

Whats the difference between 1st dan and "Technical" 1st dan?

If you do the kata, you are only "technically" a Shodan?

    Seems legit

1st Dan competitive. Technical has no shiai element to gain comp points, so a stricter knowledge base is required.
Kata should have always been part of the grading system. I am currently going through the NNK for 1st kyu and 1st dan for an upcoming theory grading.
I am finally being tested for my sandan, so I have to know full NNK, full KNK and full Gonosen.
    You 1syt kyu's have got it easy:D

Thanks for the link, it doesn't appear too challenging IMHO.

There could be a delay in people getting graded however as it now states -

    KYU GRADE PROMOTION SYLLABUS
Note - Level 1 and Level 2 coaches that qualify from January 2013, must attend the appropriate Technical
Grading Coach Re-validation module in order to be able to grade judoka

...yet I cannot find such an event on the BJA events?!
