Why is it that Judo schools only charge $30-$40 a month compared to the $160 or more a BJJ school charges. I love the grappling arts, but Bjj has become too expensive for me. Looking to join a Judo club. I am looking into several Judo clubs close to my work. I work an hour away from where I live and want to train right after work, instead of driving an 1 to 1 1/2 then train. There are several Judo dojo's in the area of where I work. So far I've only checked out (Sawtelle Judo club). I work near LAX (Marina Del Rey, Ca). I'm also planning to visit Venice Judo club on Friday. Hollywood Judo Club tomorrow hopefully. Thanks....Tom

Many Judo clubs are two classes a week at a community centre, many BJJ clubs are dedicated facilities open every day.

Pointy said. Most BJJ clubs are run as a business. They are normally the main source of income for whoever runs the club.
Overheads cost a fortune for bjj clubs compared to a judo club.

Tafftaz has it. Judo is a way of life practiced by mostly volunteers. Rarely do you see an "owner" of a judo club. Usually it's Joe the fireman or Dave the truck driver coming in after work slinging mats at the YMCA as opposed to a business with a mortgage and year long membership contracts. One is run as a business, the other as a service.

There is always room for a new fad i.e. people are paying to associate with "fame" and "coolness". But like any other field of life those are elusive. We have rarely seen one style to gain the limelight for more than a decade.

Judo seems to trudge on and on as the aim is trying to offer a way to do excercise, improve your understanding of confortations and how to deal with them as well as supplying the framework for life.

IMHO one tries to make a quick buck and another is a group that tries to work together for a common goal. Quite different business models.
