    Unbranded gi? Empty Unbranded gi?

Post by TheJudoLife Wed May 28, 2014 1:04 pm

Hi? So I have been thinking about getting a new gi, though I don't like the idea of being a walking advertisement. Pretty much every gi manufacturer seems to have there logo or emblem blazed across the shoulder. Anyone know of manufacturers of plain unbranded gi's that are of a high quality?

In the USA we have ProForce and HSU uniforms which have been pretty good utility judogi. They don't have any embroidery or shoulder boards, just a logo tag sewn onto the lower lapel tail. Or you could just get a nice one from Mizuno or Kusakura and "debadge" it by removing the embroidery. Most of the Mizuno stuff just has the small running bird on the should and it really isn't ostentatious like the Adidas kits with the racing stripes on the shoulders.

Most manufacturers of gi in Japan will take direct orders, provided that you know how to communicate with them. Badges are then really customized and oftentimes they will ask you what kind of the brand's badges you want (each brand usually has mutliple badges) and you can also determine where you want the badge, which is often done if you want them embroidered with your name or you want all those stripes on there to indicate that you are a 10th dan-holder. Also, many brands are Kôdôkan-approved and whether you want that badge too is part of standard customized ordering procedures. You can then also ask them to leave every badge off. If you haven't experienced Japanese customer service yet, you should give it a try. If in doubt, ask my tall friend NBK, who knows everything about it and then some ...

As others have said, the good Japanese brands have subtle badging that could be removed or possibly left off by special order. Mizuno, KuSakura, Mitsuboshi/Fujitaka would all serve you well.
