A great clip of Kenji Tomiki-sensei. By the way, Uke is Tadao Otaki who is the same Otaki that co-authored "Judo - Formal Techniques: Complete Guide to Kodokan Randori No Kata" with Donn Dreager.

This film is wonderful as it shows the informal, dynamic nature of Kodokan goshinjutsu as it was intended to be - as opposed to the straight-jacketed self-parody it is today.

Yes, that struck me as oddly refreshing.

Excellent demonstration. It reminds me of my kata training in Korindo Aikido. This has always been the way we practised those kata, as well as the "borrowed" kata from koryu jujutsu. The emphasis is on getting the principles right through effective execution of the technique, rather than the ritualised and aesthetic details. (Mi'ai to the accuracy of centimetre and millisecond is still crucial, though.)

There is used term Kodokan Goshin Jutsu. The term (no kata) is missing.
Is possible that the original idea was used Kodokan Goshin Jutsu as set selfdefence techniques - not as formal kata?

I am curious about this as well. And if its not formally named "no kata", wouldn't it still be 'kata'?
I actually had a discussion about this the other day, the source of that being that the dutch JBN states that the Kodokan never really formalised Goshin Jutsu as an 'official' kata.

To paraphrase Daigo-sense "There is no kata after Kano". Every formal series created after the shihan's death does not have the suffix "-no-kata". They are methods, not kata, though they are treated by the Kodokan, to all intents and purposes, as if they were kata.
