Rio Summer Olympics 2016, Team Selections Empty Rio Summer Olympics 2016, Team Selections

    Post by Y-Chromosome Sat Jun 11, 2016 8:35 am

Now that the final World Ranking is out, the teams are being announced.

Canada will have 8 competitors as follows:
    Event Gender Athletes
    60kg Men, Sergio Pessoa
    66kg Men, Antoine Bouchard
    73kg Men, Arthur Margelidon
    81kg Men, Antoine Valois-Fortier
    100kg Men, Kyle Reyes
    52kg Women, Ecaterina Guica
    57kg Women, Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard
    70kg Women, Kelita Zupancic
    http://olympic.ca/rio-2016-qualification-tracker/

The USA has 6 competitors as follows:
    52 kg. Women, Angelica Delgado
    57 kg. Women, Marti Malloy
    78 kg. Women, Kayla Harrison
    73 kg. Men, Nick Delpopolo
    81 kg. Men, Travis Stevens
    90 kg. Men, Colton Brown
    http://www.teamusa.org/News/2016/June/01/Meet-The-2016-US-Olympic-Judo-Team

Despite the smaller team, I fear the USA may outdo us for medals.  Kayla looks sure-fire for a medal if not Gold and Travis and Marti are both credible threats.

On the Canadian side Antoine V-F is a very strong hopeful and maybe, just maybe he can unseat the Georgian from the top of the heap. (I can dream can't I?) I think you could also look at either Kelita or Catherine B-P to be possible podium finishes, based on anyone in the top ten being only one match away from the podium on any given day.

While I was going through the exercise to see who would be on team Canada from the ranking list (not my job, I'm just nerdy that way...) I couldn't help nut notice that a lot of Brazilians didn't need the Host Country Bye to qualify.  With a full team on the cards and most of them bone-fide qualifiers regardless we could see a record haul for the Host country.

Chime in one and all.  Who's on your team and how do you fancy their chances?

    Finland will have tow competitors
-60 kg Men Juho Reinvall (representing Finland)
-73 kg Men Njie Faye (representing Gambia)
Why Gambia? AFAIK and the media reports, he has a Gambian and a Finnish parent. So he was able to get a Gambian passport. His points would not have been enough to earn a spot on EJU list, but AJU list he got one. + his Finnish club and Finnish NGB did not agree on conditions to fund him.

The positive side is that Gambia is now a member of IJF and what I understand he is going to open a dojo in Gambia.

I couldn't help but notice that a lot of Brazilians didn't need the Host Country Bye to qualify.

In fact, Brazil is one of two countries, qualified for all weight categories women and men, which didn't need any quota.

I am very impressed by Mongalia, a country with a population of 3 Mio. and a GDP per capita under 4000 USD.

So good for Gambia! I have always thought that what the world needed was improved Finnish-Gambian relations.

It is interesting to how the continental quota and the one competitor per NOC limit opens things up. Must be frustrating to be the number two Japanese and not go to the Olympics even though you're ranked in top 5 or ten in the world, but I think it's good for the sport, not to have triple-Japanese podiums, or we'd start to get grumbling from the IOC.

Thank you for that link, nice that someone put that together.

As for Mongolia, yes that is very impressive.

I believe this is Mongolia's ability to leverage the interest in native styles of Folk-Wrestling, which translate well into judo competition with some additional training.  They have also tried FILA type freestyle with success.

We have seen this before with the Soviet-Era Samboists in judo and the succes of countries like Turkey in Wrestling.

Even the USA can be said to be along these lines a bit.  They have their own style of wrestling in the schools and colleges but it translates well to international freestyle.

Yes, I think I remember reading about that. Good for her.

There seem to be few interesting paths to qualification.

Team Gambia via Finland and team Gabon via Canada.

Mongolian wrestling to judo to the Olympics.

All roads lead to Rome Rio it seems.

The problem will be the Swiss or more importantly CAS.
If they get into their heads that no quota but best athletes then...

It is highly unlikely that the CAS will have jurisdiction to determine the matter.

Does anyone know if there is a comprehensive report or database from the 2016 Summer Olympics that includes a listing of all the Judo Team Athletes?
Is there an electronic record or internet site that serves as the clearing house for these official Olympic records that are available to the public?

There is ippon.org a wonderful site for keeping up on major competitions

    http://judolive01.lb.judobase.org/www.judo-world.net/world/olympics/2016_rio/tta_menue.php?sprache=english&modus=1024

But for official sites my best bet is the Olympic museum in Lausanne, but they AFAIK do not have electronic resources. For older olympics there is the book
Olympic judo : history and techniques, Soames, Nicolas (1950 - ) and Inman, Roy (1947 - ), Aylesbury, United Kingdom, Crowood, 1990, 253p, HB, ISBN 185223489X
