Mizuno 1.5 weaves- Keiko or Jimmy Pedro? Empty Mizuno 1.5 weaves- Keiko or Jimmy Pedro?

Post by Heisenberg Mon Mar 25, 2013 4:19 am

    Hello All,
I'm a hot weather player (Florida) and have a few gi in my rotation. My current favorite is the Fushida Tournament, which is a 1.5 weave. I also have double weaves in a Mizuno Shiai and an Adidas Elite 800. Both doubles are pretty hot and heavy for the climate here and I'd like to add another lighter gi to the rotation so I'm not doing laundry every day.

I've looked at the Mizuno Keiko and the Mizuno Jimmy Pedro a few times and haven't found any comparison or anyone that can tell me what the difference is. Maybe it's the same gi under two different names. Has anyone here worn or at least handled both? What are the differences, pluses, minuses, etc?

My build is 5'10", 200#, fairly athletic. My Shiai is a size 5 and a little bit big, and my Fushida is a 4.5 and fits correct. Alternately I could just get another Fushida as it's been pretty good.

I would vote for getting another Fushida. I have the tournament gi and it is my favorite (other 2 are Fuji double and a Mizuno single). Perfect weight, incredibly durable, and great customer support.

I have a couple of Keiko Gi, and a friend wears a Jimmy Pedro............the only difference is you pay AUS$40.00 more for the same Gi because it has "JP" on the sleeves !!

Do you like the Keiko? Any comments on fitment, material, durability?

Here they JP and the Keiko are about the same...$125-140 USD in my size depending on who you buy from

I have both a Mizuno Keiko and a Fushida Tournament. I definitely prefer the Fushida. Even though it is a 1.5 weave, the Tournament has a better shape and fit to it, and it is not as subject to shrinkage as the Keiko.

It has been two months since I originally posted this so now for an update.

I had every intention of buying another Fushida Tournament, but when I attempted to do so I learned that Fushida had sold out of several common sizes and would be a while for restock.

I found a great deal on a Mizuno Keiko: New on eBay, my size, under $60 shipped. Sold. Score.

The fit is nice. It is the same numerical size as my Fushida Tourney (4.5), but fits slightly 'baggier'. More room through the chest and sleeves, even after several washes, while the Fushida fits more like my BJJ gi with a shorter skirt and more trim all around. The fabric is obviously lighter than my Mizuno Shiai, but has the same soft, brushed cotton feel, where the Fushida has a visibly and tactually tighter weave that looks and feels more like canvas. The Fushida has a very wide setsugi (back seam) while the Keiko has a very narrow setsugi.

I definitely prefer the Fushida pants, but only because they have four belt loops instead of Mizuno's single belt loop. The Fushida does seem slightly cooler after working up a good sweat, probably having to do with the porosity of the fabric. Price at retail is close to even between the two after shipping the Fushida to the US.

All in all they are both nice gi. I really can't say I prefer either one over the other, but I prefer both of these over either of my double weaves, which are just murderous in the Florida heat.

frankly one thing I like about the double weaves here in florida is that they absorb so much more sweat before they start feeling saturated (a feeling I can't stand). with that said my mizuno single is now my most often used gi. I've got my mizuno shiai in the bag for tonight though.

The Jimmy Pedro is made from the Keiko. So unless you like the shoulder stripes or need a blue gi. The Keiko is the one I would get if it is for myself.
