    Hello,
    I have a problem.
If I'm going to do a little competition with a friend, and I make an Ippon seo nage, or other hip or shoulder throw.
I can not get him over me. he can just pull back on me. do you maybe know one way or technique so i can avoid it.

how long have you been doing judo? this is important as it will help us gauge what your problems really are.

if you've just recently begun, the answer is to keep practicing until you get faster at doing those throws. they require speed and accuracy to execute, and those things take time to develop.

    kuzushi

make sure you keep the balance of your partner continuing in the direction of the throw. When they step around or step back, you are usually letting up with your hands and your pull.

Your friend is probably very used to you and can "feel" when you make the attempt. You should rather try and catch him out in this way: Try go for your hip or shoulder throw and when he stops you by probably leaning back (tai sabaki) you could spin into him and do a ouchi/kouchi gari, using his momentum to take him backwards. In other words, try some combinations. You could for example try the ouchi FIRST and then launch into the ogoshi/seionage or whatever it is you want to do.

Besides that, as Stacey said, you need to have a better start to your throw by getting him off balance towards the direction you want to throw him, before actually completing the throw.

I have tried to keep this is very simple terms. Good luck!

My Ippon-seionage improved when I learned to get uke tight to my back and get myself lower. If you cannot feel him pressed tight on your back, then when you kake the action isn't effective. The proximity can be improved by the hikite being firmly near your armpit and simply rotating far enough to close the gap between you and uke, winding his arm around your chest until the distance is closed.

Your friend is also a teen like you? For lack of better words, is he more physically developed/more of an adult than you?

Hiroshi Katanishi-sensei demonstrated this problem last week. Quite often kuzushi seems to be the problem when that happens. Either you have not put uke in proper kuzushi, entered without debana or your balance is on your heels. Try lowering your hip, (your belt below his is often used as a rule of thumb), bend your knees and leaning more forward with your entire body (not the just the torso). As someone else pointed out it could be that uke just knows you too well and you are telegraphing the throw.

Try a different Tai-Sabaki: In an ai-yotsu situation with a right-hand grip on his lapel, pull it straight backwards while taking a slightly rotated step back with your right leg (your body turning slightly to the right, forcing uke to take a step forward), now enter diagonally to the left under uke's right arm ippon-seoi-nage. This slight change of angle is often all it takes to open up uke for an attack. If this was unclear, I can make a video Smile
