    Mugging? Empty Mugging?

Post by Q mystic Sun Jun 02, 2013 8:18 am

    Was this a legit mugging?

I recently moved a ways from my long time town to another, half it's size, to attend school. Moving was hard. As you all know.lol

Anyway, after I got set I had some beers and hit a local pool hall for some fun. Bought rounds for the small group there on a weeknight. The bartender told me, 'you know, some people don't care for your buying them drinks, they don't appreciate' He was a good guy. He also warned me about when going out for smokes, 'to watch yourself around these guys.' He and a couple others were very cool. Older guys and welcoming to me. They left as it got late and I still bought for some guy and his girl just for the hell of it. I went out to smoke with this guy a couple times and he just talked. Ruff but talk. He had a couple friends outside alnight that wouldn't come in as they said they had no money. I said to not worry as I am buying drinks but they claimed they weren't allowed in. Young tuff looking guys with tats seen and one said he just got outta jail.lol.

Anyway, the night ended and I left the bar pretty toasted. Buddy asked me more about the judo I earlier offered to drive him to (and buy him a gi if interested) and looking back, I was in an alley with him. Next thing I know, I woke up peeling my face off the sidewalk and they were all still right there. I asked wtf happened and they said, 'you just went down.' I knew better and walked home thinking I got suckerpunched. I was pretty out of it.

IN the morning I saw my wallet was gone. They tried my card 3x to fail and was ok there but the wallet is gone(huge pain right now) and maybe $60-80.

I put a note in my new wallet saying, 'if found, a $100 reward will be given, no questions asked.' lol Might change it to $200

Not a mark of a strike on my face(no swollen bruise) so I think I got electrocuted. Massive scratches on my face(think funky chicken on pavement) and a couple of busted ribs where I think someone kicked me. Do have a good tech on stifling a sneeze now tho.lol

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

Can I ask you something ? I don't hang out a lot in drinking placed and so perhaps I am simply not privy to "the code", but am I understanding your correctly that some people found it offensive that you were paying rounds and pay for the drinks of others ? Is this kind of a standard think within the "Code" or just a local thing ?

I hear you CK and I'm not privy either, to be honest. I am usually amongst friends, somewhat at the least. Code to me is be friendly.

Not offensive, but opportunistic I think. Ironically, the younger 'jail guy' (all of them were for sure tho) was actually interested in what I was trying to say and other fella kept calling sh*t on it. Flipping out so I'd chuckle and go back in where he seemed cooler. I believe the early 20s guy was legit okay guy and he was the one who kinda helped me up.lol

ah...gotcha. Yeah, I might have sounded more enlightened than I intended but I was clear about that.lol.

My fault for sure. No doubt. I know that. No biggie really except I'm kindaa bummed that they coulda killed me.lol The wife worries about me there so I've made some rules for myself.

I did throw money around. Thinking celebrate of course but..lolol

Some were super nice about me buying drinks and offered a lot for me in the new town. I know everyones name too.lol. Go figure. Trauma.lol

Jeez Q!! Whats wrong with you? affraid
You're new in town, go to the local hole, buy drinks for the local thugs even when told not to, hang out with them, offer to buy them gi's, walk around with them in alley ways...
A fool and his money are soon parted... and sometimes violently...and especially when he's waving it around!!

I am really shaking my head at this one. But then again I don't really understand pub culture.

Even as a somewhat frequent flyer I am losing it myself.

lol, yeah. Not what is expected, that's for sure. It was very, very dumb.

I don't care about the stats. The younger ones these days are uninspired.lol

is it possible you really did just pass out, and you could have accidentally lost it eat another time? Or is it possible they just opportunistically grabbed your wallet when you passed out?

I was considering that, but I really wasn't that drunk. Anyway, it was confirmed by a French guy a few nights ago. It was a punch. Buddy stood to my right just behind me.

Unless the French guy is bsing me. He didn't have a lot of good to say about the puncher.

I wasn't, really. It was my first night in the new town and they happened to be hanging in the same outdoor smoking area. I haven't seen them since.

    um, yeah, you were mugged.

Now comes the victim blaming: what were you thinking of? Waiving money around and getting trashed in a bar you've never been in before, where you're not with friends who can drag you out and say, "hey, going home with that guy is a bad move" or, "you're so f***ed up right now that you're easy pickings for the first guy who wants to see the inside of your wallet" - dude!

Go to judo. Stay away from pubs, and go to judo. Judo really doesn't help when you're sh!tfaced.

After that night, about a month or so later, I met a French guy at that same bar who told me what happened.

While I was talking to the one fella who was interested in judo, his buddy was standing behind me, to my right (for a few minutes, faking the strike) and then he 'popped' me in the chin. He said I wasn't out but that I went down and got right back up.

^Which is what I had thought, except that since there was no bruise or soreness I thought I mighta been 'electrocuted'.

No blaming. I don't know how often I had stated on sherdog that all is fair after midnight when at heavy drinking bars.lol Even worse was that the bartender had forewarned me.lol.

I rarely go to pubs/bars, over the last 10 years.

I do think that judo can help a lot when drunk. Not so much when drunk vs an ambush.Smile

I will be going to judo again. The closest adult one is 75 minutes away with 3 specific class times, just takes a little preparation.Crying or Very sad Luckily, the closest one is also happens to be one of the best.

I think that the fella that I was actually talking to was sober and sincere. His buddy wasn't.

good question. Fell out during the fall probably. (edit) Yeah, my spring jacket, the wallet would fall out the side easy. Probably just fell out and I never was aware of it and they took it when I left.

I did get kicked when I was down so I know I didn't bounce back up.

I have been in this town for a few months now and my situation above does feel strange. I have also been out often in similar in my hometown, prior, and it is very strange from that pov. I think it was just one of those things.

I don't think fella was a 'mugger'. I think he was too stoned and having way too much fun.

The next time you decide to talk about martial arts in a bar, around strangers as you throw open your wallet, you should walk to the center of the room and call out "Who here wants to fight?!" because although you don't mean something like that at all (it seems) that is exactly how violence prone proles will handle it.

Dont let people get that close to you who are displaying a hostile attitude (the calling BSon you guy), even Muhamis Bruce Al-Lee will have a hard time stopping, deflecting or absorbing a punch thrown that close and it's fire for effect follow up of fist, and feet a stompping.

Glad this gets to be a lesson and not worse.

I understand what you are saying and I agree. I think the situation was much different than my lack of writing skills displayed above but I agree with everything you say from this perspective.

I kinda wish I could re-write this story more accurately, or that it be deleted because I now feel that I will be kicked in the gut by every new member telling me, as politely as they can, what an idiot I appeared to be.Laughing  It doesn't look very good after my new baby thread either.Laughing

    Yes, but consider this as well;

Be relaying your story, you might have reminded some people of some possabilites as to what could happen to them outside the dojo and the ruleset of any said art and system along with it's culture, this factors in here. I am certian you train with a great group of people who are friendly. That is good.

Just by what you have described, you ignored some warning signs, broek the rule about letting peole who are acting unfirendly close to you, ect. You know all this now and so do some other people who read this, others you tell this to.

This might be something you one day use to inform lessons on self defense when you are a sensei, if your dojo spends time on such things directly (other than the great SD inherit in Judo).

A core part of martial arts is learning lessons, even really hard and sometimes embarassing ones.

And part of street fighting expeierence (and I am not getting into the loaded moralities and Avoid, ect. No you should not be trying to collect it. ) is the fact that if you do it enough times, you get your but kicked. You do it at all you tend to at least get injured to one degree or another. I've "won" and not felt like any kind of winner, with 2 lose teeth, a swollen hand, bruised ribs and a big knot upside my head.

And that story was real young stupidity in action, all round! Very Happy

It is good you came out OK to learn and impart this lesson on to others.

Stay out of dives, hit the mats, cross train a bit with some Boxing, just to get used to the punching at you, getting hit and stopping that crap so you can bounce them off the ground and go home to your kid.

Care not what any of us on an internet forum thinks when it comes as negative or to be jerks.

    Congrats on the new child.
