Hidehiko Yoshida in 1993 was in his prime, two times World medalist, Olympic champion, very phisically fit at 78 kg. He had a very quick and strong tachi waza and a good ne waza (he trained with Koga).
What would have he done if in that period he had faced Royce Gracie (who was of the same age, height, experience and weight of Yoshida) or other first UFC fighter?

    If off the hop...

He would have quickly assumed 'top control' in Royce's guard and constantly pepper Royce pretty good for a few minutes to where he would lose concept and Royce would armbar him via having Yoshida defending a triangle.

    If after understanding fighting...

Just prolly would have pounded Royce inside a few minutes where they would stop the fight. Maybe sub due to Royce voluntarily relinquishing control.

You should have just pm'd me. =)

Knowing, or understanding how to fight is important. Yoshida in this case prolly wouldn't have and Royce has fought a lot compared.  Most likely scenario number 1.

Perhaps hard to accept but there are a few limitations to human life: one of those limitations is that no one knows what "would" and "will", only what "is" and "was". That may be unsatisfactory at times, but if this was not so, I guarantee you that human nature would cause for some very unpleasant things to happen as a consequence of that knowledge.

Emanual, since you asked here, I will say almost any typical no name international level competitor in judo near the similar weight that had recently dropped out due to alcoholism, fighting at bars, and relationship issues, would have smoked Royce. And/or Yoshida.

Judo tho. =) Prolly not wrestling. Subs were huge.

Sorry I forget to say, in this fantasy match no striking is allowed, only judo grappling vs bjj grappling; standing and on the ground.
In my opinion Yoshida would have defeated Gracie, maybe knocking him out with an ippon.

Yoshi would win just out of athletic ability prolly. Very unlikely knockout with ippon. Royce would pull guard and even if Yosh did get a chance for a throw, it would be very unlikely that Yosh would resort to targeting Royce's head to ground impact so grotesquely. Royce was good in mma but not so much in sport from what I read. I think that Ypsh could have beaten Royce in sport grappling. Prolly too fast for Royce.

Maybe someone needs to throw in Chuck Norris and Jet Li to speed up the nonsense ...

Sorry both are busy. Chuck is pushing the earth out of orbit with his pushups. Jet Li is jumping between trees through the boreal forest trying to avoid making tracks in the snow.

Simply put "it never would have happened"

In 1993 the Gracies were still trying to sell the dream so they were fighting tiurnaments and dojo challenges against cans. Wasn't till about 1997 that sub Olympic level dudes (wrestlers) started tuning in to make jiujitsu irrelevant.
