Yep, correct reading of the kanji 常胤 in this case Jōin, the establishment the misreading probably caused to a great deal by E.J. Harrison publishing a book with Oda's techniques and on the book cover prominently --though erroneously-- featuring 'Tsunetane Oda'.

E.J.Harrison's silly mistake was to call Oda "Tsunetani Oda", rather than "Tsunetane"; just as he wrongly called Kawaishi Mikinosuke "Mikonosuke". The colophon of Oda's two-volume Jūdō taikan 柔道大觀 indeed gives his name in furigana as "Oda Jōin", using the more formal Sino-Japanese reading of his personal name; but Tsunetane would be equally correct, and many Japanese sources refer to him thus. I imagine that Oda was named after the famous general Chiba Tsunetane 千葉常胤 (1118-1201), one of the founders of the Kamakura shogunate. For all I know, members of his immediate family called him something else entirely.

    Short bio:

Alfredo Vismara's book Ne Waza appears to credit Oda with developing judo's ne waza to its current state, possibly completing Kano's vision. I say "appears" as it's in Italian and I'm relying on Google Translate (which can be a little unreliable):

Anyone with better Italian than me able to comment?
