    Ryugoro Fukushima Empty Ryugoro Fukushima

Post by DougNZ Thu Apr 25, 2013 2:57 pm

Ryugoro Fukushima (also Reitoro Fukushima and Ray Shima) brought ju-jitsu to Sydney, Australia in 1906. He toured Australia and New Zealand in the 1900s and 1910s, putting on shows and fighting in matches. He ran a ju-jitsu club in Sydney until 1923, when he returned to Japan but went back to Australia in 1933. He moved on to Christchurch, New Zealand in 1936, setting up a club there. Fukushima was naturalised in 1939 and died at Christchurch in 1958.

An early Australian student of Fukushima was Len Noyes, who went on to head up the Australian Society of Ju-Jitsuans, now the Australian Jujitsu Federation. An early New Zealand student was Jack Fielding, who founded the Judo-Kwai Christchurch, which became Can-Am-Ju (Canterbury Amateur Judo), one of New Zealand's oldest surviving judo clubs.

Does anyone have any information on where or who trained Ryugoro Fukushima (1885-1958)?

Len Noyes was graded by Fukushima to black belt 3 bars. No-one quite knows what that means, but it may give some clues as to where Fukushima was trained. It is said that he was a professor of 13 years at Hagiwara College, Yokohama, and taught at the Kotobuki police station there. It is also thought he studied either Ryugo-ryu, Tenjin Shinyo Ryu and/or Daito Ryu

If you can provide the kanji for his name, that would help.

I can't find any reference to a 'Hagiwara College' in Japan.

Yes, that's him. Mostly, the 1910s press called him Ryogoro Shima. His Christchurch gym was called Shima's Gym.
