So I started my own club last year and had 3 students with some judo experience.

I now have around 30 registered students with around 17-22 on the mat each class.

Tonight I had one of the new students - one that started from scratch - throw me with a legitimate (ippon) throw in full-blooded randori.

Look, ive been thrown plenty of times in randori of course but this was the first time I have truly been caught with a great throw by one of them.
It was enough for me to stop the class, tell everyone that did NOT see and gave the young man a round of applause.

    Man, I felt proud.

Yes, I know that feeling. Congratulations, sensei!

My sensei used to tell us, "If you throw Sensei, practice is over."  I never knew whether that meant that he would shut down practice or whether it meant that he'd stop playing around and kill us with some serious judo.  Smile Either way, I never succeeded in throwing him.

Sounds like your club is doing well. Pleased for you, well done and well done to your student.

That's such a proud feeling. Similar to my post earlier about my daughter knocking me down for the first time. What was the throw?

Wow! you're doing great! Keep up the good work, keep them on the mat, and get surprised more often. Excellent.

    Yeah - thanks to all!

They are really doing well. I took a group of 9 to a national schools tournament and entered them in the novice division as this was their very first competition.

Returned with 7 medals including 4 gold

Its so fulfilling to see them step on the mat, eyes wide like a deer in the headlights. When the referee says Hajime! to see them take the grip as I showed them, execute throws just like I taught them etc.

More so, to see, when losing showing sportsmanship.

Got a good thing going here...
