Here are some interesting videos with kumikata explanations from famous and very strong Georgia/Greece judoka Ilias Iliadis (Olympic champion, 3 times World Champion). He has very good fighting for grip and he uses it for his very nice Koshi waza techniques.

Interesting perspective about kumi kata. I found it helpful as he seems to favor the same grip that I do.

Off the point, but I recognize that dojo as being the one at the Welsh Sports Center/institute in Cardiff? (I think that is what it is called)

Lovely place - had the chance of training there with Sensei Alan Jones in 2012. This video brought back some nice memories.

Aiyotsu  (Same grip used by both persons)

The Aiyotsu is the basic Judo fighting stance, with both opponents using their same hand (right or left) as their Hiki-te (Pulling hand). A stance in which both contestants grasp the opponent's left sleeve with their right hand is called a "right grip", and the reverse is called a "left grip".

The best mutual Kumi-te for the contestants are the right natural posture right-side grip (with right hand as the Tsurite [Lifting hand]) and the left natural posture left-side grip (left hand is the Tsurite [Lifting hand]), which are known as the Kenka-yotsu (Asymmetrical grips by the two opponents) stance . Compared to the Aiyotsu (same grip used by both persons), the Kenka-yotsu (Asymmetrical grips by the two opponents) leaves more space between the contestants, making it more difficult to apply a Waza. Applying a Waza from this stance requires a prior maneuver such as a feint, etc.
