Dr. Richard Riehle Empty Dr. Richard Riehle

Post by Richard Riehle Sat Oct 10, 2015 8:20 am

Just a note to my form friends that I will be admitted to the hospital on Monday morning for surgery on my coronary arteries. It is fairly serious because they need to crack open my chest and muck around with my heart area. However, I should be in good shape afterwards.

I will have to suspend my Judo practice for a few months. I will turn 80 in January, so my competition days are somewhat behind me (last was a World Master's about eight years ago). I think I will not compete anymore anyway.

However, I will continue to be active as a teacher and coach, and also continue to do light randori, uchi-komi, and some kata even after surgery.

I will not be able to respond to any comments for a while since I will be heavily sedated for at least a week, and somewhat slowed down with other priorities for at least a month.

    Good luck, feel better soon.

It's surprising the number of judoka who eventually end up with a zipper on their chest. Expectation of returning to the mat and scaring the bejeezus out of a few kids is entirely reasonable!

My home dojo is predominantly adults, military officers from all branches of the service, Federal employees, military officers from various treaty (NATO, etc.) partners. I occasionally visit dojos with kids.

Dude ... you are pushing 80 ... what constitutes a kid to you probably qualifies as a grandpa to the rest of us!

You take care, amigo. My guess is that I won't see you ... again ... at the FKC. Let's plan on next year.

    Cheers.
