is this a Kano quote ? Empty is this a Kano quote ?

Hello all, it has been awhile since I last visited here.

I stumbled on this supposed Kano quote, somewhere on the Internets :
"You fought like young bulls locking horns; there was nothing refined or dignified about any of the techniques I witnessed today. I never taught anyone to do Kodokan Judo like that. If all you can think about is winning through brute strength, that will be the end of Kodokan Judo"

So, my question to you, men of Culture and fine taste, does anyone knows where it came from ?

I do kind of like it, so I am curious.

    Regards to all of you,
    J-F.

I've seen it here, in Dutch, which is not a problem for Jihef: http://www.truefork.org/Hajime/jujutsu_judo.htm. Maybe you can find out where Eli Steenput has found the quote.

Well, I asked him, and he translated it from… Steven R. Cunningham also.

    So, the same source…

Hmmm and with the disclaimer below that page ("*Most of this is from oral transmissions (kuden), personal notes, and so on. In some cases, my ear may not have been able to properly discriminate the Japanese sounds, so I apologize for any errors. Undoubtedly, there are also omissions. ") I doubt that this quote is a 'certified' Kano quote. Although it's not a word that doesn't fit in. Kano had such opinions about judo and brute strength.

I believe it is in “Three Budo Masters” by John Stevens, but I do not have the english version of that book. Could someone have a look and check this ?

Although I do not think J. Stevens cites his sources, I may be wrong… bounce

I found a Japanese person asking the same question and it is attributed to Kano with regards to fighting at close range.
    嘉納治五郎は至近距離で組み合う柔道を見て、
「これでは牛の角突き合いではないか。This is like two bulls locking hornsみんな当て身(打撃技)でやられてしまうEveryone is just going to get done in by Atemi strikes。これは私の考えている柔道ではない This is not the image of Judo I have.」

Interestingly (for about 3 people around the planet) Kano shihan was concerned about how to train judoka to deal with boxers and being engaged from a distance.

That this could be an instance addressing that issue is interesting. To me, at least.

    Thanks, Meitetsu
