The Maeda book would be the best choice.
Not so much out of interest I am just being pragmatic.
A translation of the Maeda book with somehow BJJ added somewhere in the title might give you sufficient 'means' to finance a translation of the BRD all by yourself. Then we will all be happy.
Just do it.

Sure it can be done, but not by one person within a reasonable amount of time. And that is apart from the issue if an agreement for a translation would be reached.
It is something to think about though.

In the mean time Noboru send a list with very interesting books, of which some have very few pages.

I think there is not enough of a commercial market in English to even consider tackling this as a book length translation / publication, even before paying royalties to the Japanese public.

The number of people that care about this can be herded into a small room, take all their wallets, and you still wouldn't have the cash for cab fare home.

Funny thing is that I know you are right.
But still there is something nagging in me: yes we can; never give up, never give in ; etc.

You know there is guy who translates Chinese texts on fighting arts and he offers them for free on his website. See Brennan translations.
I am not saying we should all do this. I for one, would not.
But maybe a translation of the BRD should be a labour of love, with a few enthousiast who would start a foundation, collect a bit of money, negotiate with the Japanese who own the rights...

NBK is sadly right - especially if the book doesn't have "Gracie" as an author's name, or isn't recognized as a current MMA or BJJ champ.

But if eric did translate it, he could call it "new BJJ musha shugyo."

Yikes, that Maeda book is like 400 pages.

That is about halfway you know what book.

There were quite a few interesting ,shorter books in the list. On the ground in Japan there are probably many more to find.

Many years ago I had a conversation with an author of several books on these arts. This author, who will temain nameless, told me he would only write about things he really wanted to write about. He was not concerned at all with other things.
I took that as one of my principles from then on. If that means 100 copies of a title are sold wordwide, so be it.

That is basically what I do, translate what I happen to be interested in. Im fortunate that there are some people interested in the works I have self-published. Still it would be nice if there were a way to get books like the Maeda one done.

Never give in, never give up. My father told me that (admittedly a long time ago). I think he was quoting Churchill or so.

Start on the Maeda book. In the mean time keep yourself happy with smaller projects. It is always good to see something finished.
Keep your eyes open you never know when an opportunity presents itself.

Working, raising a family, training and teaching. That would be a full agenda for most. Not for me I had to go writing on it.
Opportunities? No, nothing, nada. Just a shitload of work

I think any serious Judo Scholar is going to want to read this novel.
I know we've got film, TV series, anime, but you want to get to the source of it all.

Well OK..... any REALLY serious judo scholar is going to learn Japanese for themselves... but some of us are struggling with day jobs to pay the mortgage and tuition and aren't blessed with super-great linguistic aptitude.

I bet you the Fighting Films gang could sell a ton of copies through their site.
A French version I'm sure would also sell well.
