Not a scientific assessment by any stretch, but I've just watched three matches in a row decided by penalties for "excessive" grip fighting, or gripping infringements that just seem petty.

It feels like the matches are being decided by the referees as much as the players.

Here's your answer ... Jan Snijders (Head EJU Refereeing Committee in Paris), my translation:

"I absolutly don't think that it is a problem if you have to adapt your sport to modern needs of the time".

"Everything constantly evolves and as managers you have the moral duty to take care that your are not being passed. After all you have to make sure you remain an Olympic sport, because only then you get access to the worls of sponsoring, which in turn assures that you remain in the picture. I regret too that there are sports where they have worked very hard but where because of not having an Olympic statute they no longer get any attention. This is how our society works".

"It's also important that judo for the general public --let's say the TV audience-- becomes more understandable. Before you would, for example, have an incomprehensible situation where a leg grab one moment meant a score and at a different moment meant disqualification. That of course makes no sense to any lay person."

"During the last Olympic Games we arrived at the painful conclusion that as much as 20% of the matches ended in Golden Score. This was an untenable situation. During the last Grand Slam we saw this percentage being reduced to just 2%. You should consider this a great success". (...)

You get a pretty good picture here of the thinking of the EJU and IJF:

1. Money-driven.
2. The absurd connotation that they think they can make judo into an overall spectator sport like soccer. Problem is an will remain that the only people who watch judo are people who practice judo and parents and spouses. The EJU or IJF can go stand on their head what they want, it will not change. It's the nature of the beast. The only thing that will change is that it is already alienating many people who ARE actual judoka who used to watch an attend judo contests, and who no longer do being fed up with all the nonsense.
3. The reduction of Golden Score is a poor and artificial excuse. It is the IJF that introduced the stupid Golden Score, and now to conclude that it is a success that they are able to curtail the effects of their own nonsense, is a joke. Encho-sen (Golden Score) should never have been created and does not belong in judo. Abolish it and you have a 100% reduction of matches ending in Golden Score. As you say, instead we now have a great deal of contests being decided by penalties. Is this an improvement. Judoka should be restricted in what they do in contests as little as possible. Just look at the number of hansoku-make. In the 1960s and 1970s you would see a match ending in hansoku-make maybe once every 2 years. Hansoku-make was a rare concept. It was something referees had to think about before issuing it to make sure they did it the right way because they might have never done it before; it was thàt rare. Today, it is considered common. And this is a positive evolution ? What nonsense.

Thanks for the background to this situation. I think your statement here sums up my frustration, in that the current conditions of competition seems so far removed from this ideal.

Perhaps this is simply an intractable problem: as soon as one attempts to influence the behavior of players in order to make judo appear a certain way to spectators, it seems to produce unpredictable and often absurd outcomes.

Perhaps another truth is that - unfortunately for the IJF - unrestricted activity by judoka in contests doesn't often make for very spectacular television (unless the differential in talent or fitness is very great). One thing I have observed is that I will thoroughly enjoy watching quite a boring and inactive contest (especially a final between close rivals) at local shiai standing near the edge of the tatatmi, but be surprised at how "boring" it is watched as a video clip later.

I find the no leg grabbing rule a breath of fresh air to be honest. It makes for more spectacular Judo for sure, as there have been a lot more forward throws since its introduction in Paris.

On the one hand, the ease with which hansoku-makes were given, particularly in Dusseldorf, was ridiculous and seemingly unfair... On the other hand, penalizing negative grip fighting should hopefully lead to more spectacular Judo as competitors will be more wary of it and instead concentrate more on attacking.
