In the mid sixties I was on a Marine base judo team. We were a cocky lot and our coach Ernie Cates decided we needed to see how tough real judo could be. He arranged for us to travel to Seinan Dojo in Los Angeles. At that time all the judoka there were Japanese and we left with our tails between our legs. I don't think I've ever been throw so hard, fast, and as many times in two hours.
Kuniuki Sensei presided and invited only two of us back.i was told later that was because myself and another brown belt never gave up or rested. It was an honor to be invited back
Two years later I broke my arm and dislocated my elbow in a shiai. Kuniuki Sensei came over to me, had me lay on my back, and hold on to the referees leg with my good arm. He put my belt in my mouth, told me to bite it and proceeded to set my elbow in place. I don't remember if I thanked him, but I do remember that he smiled at me when I stood up.
