Growing up in the late seventies and early eighties where the TV program “Superstars” was one of the biggest shows on TV you couldn’t fail to be impressed with Brian Jacks exploits and he was somewhat of a sporting idol of mine. I was very lucky to have shared the mat with him last year when he visited Yoshin Ryu Judo Club for a session but never got the opportunity to have my photo taken with him. Although the impending birth of my son or daughter of course is more important, I just wanted to let off some steam that I have missed out on this opportunity.

Letting off some steam
I was informed last week that Brian Jacks 8th Dan, Former Olympic and World Bronze Medallist, multiple European and British Champion, ex-coach to Neil Adams and of course Former British, European and World Superstars champion (remember those dips) is coaching at Yoshin Ryu (one of my clubs) tonight. Unfortunately with my wife about to give birth at any moment and the club being an hour’s drive away I cannot attend.

I try to be one of those Judoka who can tell others that he has shared the mat with other famous Judoka as opposed to those Judoka who can tell others that he has shared a phot opportunity with some famous Judoka.

Well missing out on the chance to share the mat with him again is what i'm blowing off steam about but there's nothing wrong with wanting a little keepsake for my blog.finarashi wrote:I try to be one of those Judoka who can tell others that he has shared the mat with other famous Judoka as opposed to those Judoka who can tell others that he has shared a phot opportunity with some famous Judoka.

Disgraceful, not only has your unborn child interrupted your judo, but you didn't invite anyone on the forum to the club.

My dad always tells me the story of how my mum going into labour cost him a shot at the GB squad nearly 49 yrs ago.
He still never lets me forget it.

Re: Letting off some steam
My dad spent some time training with Jacks back in the day, when Jacks used to come down to Swansea.
To this day he still reckons he was the best judoka he ever was on the mat with.

Re: Letting off some steam
It is a picture of Errol Field and Brian Jacks.
I have a picture of the two of them with me when I was about 15 and Errol was about 31 or 32.
