Good thing judo is so much more than winning. Good thing judo is so much more than standing on the medal stand. Good thing your instructor is prepared to teach you ALL of judo, not just jacket wrestling for kids and thugs. Good thing judo is much more than another hypocritical, over-commercialized Olympic marketing mind-f**k carried on the backs of hard-working athletes who sacrifice their youth and often their health for our momentary amusement.

    From the article:

“There would be many of hundreds, if not thousands of athletes that don’t have the notoriety who are at any one time contending with the same things.”

Andrew Hughes, an expert in sports marketing and branding at the Australian National University, said dealing with the transition was a problem across all sports.

“When they stop, there’s no training regime, no fame, adulation, no adrenaline. It all disappears,” he said.

    Nice find!

The sentence from this article that makes me saddest is ....

“Nothing in life can replicate it, it is not being replaced by anything as fulfilling or satisfying.”

WTF? No more joy in the perfect throw? What about the birth of a child? Seeing your first grandchild? Making a new piece of art? Life is more than an medal hung on your neck. Its a good thing that proper Judo (as you have implied) enhances the experiences of life outside a single shia....

It's not about medals though (I'd guess) but rather the emotional pay off and sense of achievement that such things bring. IOW, the entire construction of self image.

The destruction of that self image, along with the removal of support network (coach, team-mates etc) seems to lead to the kind of ennui some athletes encounter.

Some time ago (just after the 2012 scandal with the Australian swim team), I caught a current affairs show that showed the 'behind the scenes' of the Australian team. These guys don't make a lot of cash (less than $20K...if that), nor can they work/study in any meaningful way (training schedules in excess of 30hr/wk). Common also to pay for their own airfares (in part or whole) etc while officials fly first class.

The whole thing reminded me of a pyramid scheme, tbh.
