We received personal E-mails shortly after the EJU Montpellier symposium with invitations but I did not see the sense of attending this, knowing exactly what to expect, same old story, a bunch of guys telling this is wrong because it has to be like that furthermore unable to answer anything or providing any evidence to substantiate whatever. The topic of the seminar was actually "kata for the Club" and went out from the EJU Education Commission. The invitation read: "As you know the EJU be held next week the first seminar taught by experts Kodokan intended " kata for the Club" , with him and through the experience of these great masters intend to promote this area of judo, not only from the traditional view ( competition ) but also from the point of view or the idea of using the kata for those fans judo that are interested in perhaps no other activity than the competition , and also as a tool to improve training club, definitely as a education tool." Sameshima-sensei is among the pedagogically most talented instructors at the Kôdôkan. It is also great to see some very talented former competitive jûdôka there as I noticed Mike Swaine and Ezio Gamba amongst others among the participants. It's great to see that these gentlemen despite their achievements remain open to learn. This stimulating presence in combination with some of the better teachers from the Kôdôkan should provide a fruitful bedrock for learning. At issue though remains the approach to kata which the video shows to remain a rigid thing without much self-critical reflection on what is being done. I noticed that attention was devoted to kata-guruma but the clip shows that yet again kata guruma seems to be approached as something where the opponent is horizontally put on the shoulder while tori poses as if he is waiting for a picture; it all has little to do with the wheel, dynamic wheel carried out by the shoulder as an axis, which is really what kata-guruma is about. Without realizing that one is left with dead wood that serves no purpose except for a marrionet-like staged replication of a supposed standard.
