In many countries there is discussion on the effect of repeated punched to the head. This has led to various safety related questionn being asked and even on bans.

From legal standpoint it is a very gray area to rule. What is the level of permitted violence. This has been a problem in professional boxing where one can easily arrange a match without any backup organization.

What is sports is another question. To me MMA is not sports. But to me chess is not a sport.
We have also a question of chicken and egg. If you do not have a valid international sports organization then you can not state you are sports. But IMHO for valid international sports organization you need more than twenty valid national country level organizations. Untill MMA has these kind of organizations the question of whether it is a sport will be ruled on national level.
IMMAF has three full member nations; Norway, Sweden and USA.

It's stupid. If they do that for mma, they must do it for k1, boxing, takewondo and all sports that allow head strikes.

What about France? They allow kick boxing, boxing, takewondo but not mma? It's beyond stupidity.
