Japan Judo Accident Victims Association (JJAVA) Empty Japan Judo Accident Victims Association (JJAVA)

Post by noboru Mon Aug 18, 2014 11:57 pm

This is a very sad topic. However, I think important.

From Japan Judo Accident Victims Association (JJAVA) website:

    Judo Accidents

Over the 27-year period 1983 to 2009, 108 students died as a result of judo accidents in Japanese junior and senior high schools (age range ca 12 to 18years)1 , 60% of them from brain injury. The mean of four deaths per year is significantly higher than in any other school sport. The incidence of death in judo among junior high school students (age range ca 12 to 15years) is 5.3 times higher than in basket ball, which has the second highest death rate.
Note that these figures do not include deaths from accidents outside school such as in private judo clubs, so the total number of deaths in young people is higher still. There have also been a large number of serious injuries, many of which have resulted in chronic higher brain dysfunction or persistent disturbance of consciousness.

    Our Mission

When judo deaths and injuries occur under the supervision of schools, victims and their families often encounter barriers to the investigations into the causes and who was responsible. Japan Judo Accident Victims Association (JJAVA) is a group of judo accident victims, their families, and other concerned people, founded with the mission to support victims and find ways to reduce death and serious injury among students in Japan through introduction of effective safety measures as standard practice in the sport of judo. JJAVA is studying international best practice and developing proposals for an improved safety regime.
Martial arts will soon become compulsory for boys and girls in all public junior high schools in Japan, so it is particularly important to ensure that adequate and appropriate attention is given to safety in judo instruction and practice.

I found that the president of the Kodokan Uemura already mentions in his 2013 New Year speech find safe methods of teaching judo to children.

    http://www.kodokan.org/e_info/topics201301.html

Haruki Uemura wrote:In April, Japanese martial arts, including Judo, became a required subject in junior high schools’ health and physical education curriculum. To support a smooth start of this new curriculum, we made sure that the standard teaching method adopted ensures the safety of children learning Judo. I am having various policies carried out to deploy an enjoyable, safe curriculum that conveys the high level of Judo’s physical education and educational value.

In the 2011 was released the new DVD with some instructions for safety judo teaching on the school (available only in japanese).

Here are informations from japanese version of Kodokan Internet Shop (KIS). Available only in japanese KIS.

These set ( Volume 3 DVD, 1 book ) are very expansive (51840 Japanese Yen (cca 505 USD), 77760 Japanese Yen (cca 760 USD)) then other DVDs from KIS ... Why?   It is not good for support of safety judo teaching...

Too bad this material isn't in English. This should be a must read for all instructors. Impressive the rate of brain injuries among elementary and high school players. I was always aware of the knee and shoulder injuries, but this was an eye opener for me. Thanx for posting this.

Sigh. No subtitles. No equivalent from US Judo orgs. Sure, there is the occasional weekend-long course at some location in this wide country ... maybe a manual someplace ... but short videos like this are perfect for adding meaningful content to yudanshakai meetings, for parent introductions, special cartoon treat for students ... projector and screen already in the dojo ... doesn't get used much.
