Judo vs single leg
i had to switch to a bjj gym recently where everybody uses single leg takedowns. What is a good judo counter to this?

Hands on the back of the opponent's head, grab hair (if any), bring knee up sharply into nose.

Re: Judo vs single leg
You could also look at tomoe-nage or sumi-gaeshi, depending on how they are doing it.
Meaning not so much as a counter throw, but rather as a technique to use what they are doing to continue the roll over backwards and ending up in top position.
But then, I know zilch about BJJ... but, I would want to try get the leg they are NOT attacking between the attackers legs and use it in a rear-sacrifice way (such as sumi-gaeshi) to (try) to flip him up and over you, keeping grip on his gi and rolling over backwards ending up in the dominant position.
Whether this will work or not? Dunno...

Re: Judo vs single leg
Counter throwing directly off the single is increasingly low percentage if the guy knows what he's doing. Safer to break the grip and re-attack on your terms, in general. This is the basic idea (Budo Jake's terrible single leg aside):

Snark aside, there's a correct way to do this if you can get your opponent's head out of position:BillC wrote:Hands on the back of the opponent's head, grab hair (if any), bring knee up sharply into nose.

uchimata response
As JudoSensei wrote, uchimata or kenken uchimata could be useful in some from these situations. Kenken Osotogari too. I think that important is make uchimata without delaying after chatching of your leg. Quick turning your body and press his head down.
But the the technique from BillCs comment is better and easier, more effective :-)

Re: Judo vs single leg
Not really, unless you know how to properly defend the takedown and deviate his head position you'd be trying to knee yourself a knockout blow to the chest/just helping him put you on the floor?noboru wrote:

Re: Judo vs single leg
So, to OP, how long have you been doing Judo, what is your skill level. A lot of what you might be able to do depends on how good you are at Judo.
In any case, the first thing to do is stop their attempt, that is, keep from being taken down.
That starts with your posture and grip relative to your opponent/training partner.

Now how about a "counter" to a reasonably skillful attempt that doesn't stop in the middle of the attack ?

I'm definitely coming then!
To the OP, Ben's comment is valid, this reversal I did is very common in wrestling and is called a reverse lift BUT you must first stuff the shot and clear the head for it to work, if you don't halt the momentum your opponebt will drive through you (or pull the leg and use the iside head to ground you) and if you don't clear the head your opponent will take the outside single or spin to your back.
Also the suplex will get you DQ'd in bjj.
Cheers

cool, wasn't sure if it'd be classified as a slam or the dreaded sumi geashi which was rumored to be banned

Re: Judo vs single leg
The slam thats illegal is picking your opponent up from a ground position, there's no restriction on throws from the feet except the new one about belt-grip head-spiking from a head-outside single. The rules are available on the IBJJF website, by the way (complete with the shittiest demo of a single-leg ever) no need to rely on rumours.Ricebale wrote:PointyShinyBurning wrote:That's a legal throw in IBJJF rules.Ricebale wrote:

Re: Judo vs single leg
here's an easy counter For myself, looking to break their grip and get back to neutral. If leg is stuck in the middle I'll go for sumi gaeshi. Uchi Mata if you can time them coming in.
