Social economist Matsubara Ryūichirō, himself a third-degree black belt, explores the roots of the crisis and prospects for the sport’s rehabilitation.

Uemura kanchô was ousted as the head of the All Japan Judo Federation after another scandal came to light - widespread financial corruption (coaches taking stipends for developing programs and athletes but no work - and kickbacks of a large portion of those stipends) and coverups of sexual harassment by executives. A couple of guys on the board forced him and other Kodokan board members out. The new head of the AJJF is a no nonsense guy from the business world, and his #2 is a retired police executive who dealt with organized crime.
