TOURIST LIBRARY: A Complete Set of Forty Volumes
This series was produced between 1934 and 1942 as a way of promoting foreign travel to Japan. Each booklet presented an important aspect of Japanese culture and was written by a contemporary specialist in the field. In the world of martial art there is one booklet on sumo and the very sought after Judo, written by no less than the founder of judo, Jigoro Kano.
From the beginning there were plans on producing 100 volumes, but the world conflicts allowed only 40 of them to see the light.
Some on these are common, but there are some rarities, besides the Judo topic. The latter numbers were produced in a very small amount, the pressure from tourists in the beginning of the 40’s was not that demanding I guess. The hand-made paper is one of the more expensive, both considering the late production and the main interest in the topic. It is a beautiful printing with examples of different paper attached in the book.
There were no dustjackets issued with the books, other than the glossy onion paper that protected the painted image glued directly to the books.
Even if some topics have been presented in more up to date texts, every one of these small nuggets definitely deserves a space on the bookshelf. I value my books highly, therefore they are, as you can see, heavily guarded.
