MURRIETA, Calif. (AP) - Prosecutors say a former booster parent has admitted he stole more than $200,000 from a Southern California high school band.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Wednesday (http://bit.ly/130oXxj ) 55-year-old Paul Nogaki pleaded guilty June 28 and was sentenced to serve 120 days in a work release program.
He has also been ordered to pay $20,000 a year in restitution, and made an initial payment of $48,000.
As treasurer for the Vista Murrieta band booster club, Nogaki had access to funds. Board members said they grew suspicious when he wouldn't hand over financial records to the new treasurer.
More than 350 students are in the school's bands.
Defense attorney Nic Cocis says Nogaki is truly sorry, and he took the money because his business was failing and he faced family medical bills.
