RIP Syd Hoare (1939 - 2017)

In very sad news, the great Syd Hoare passed away yesterday morning after a long and courageous battle with illness. A 1964 Olympian, author, commentator and former Chairman of the BJA he will be very sadly missed. May he rest well.

Sad indeed.

I did not know Mr. Hoare personally.

We corresponded some about his last judo history book. I started w some trepidation, as an American only knowing second hand about him.

He took interest in my comments, we discussed them and other things, and he was seemingly not at all offended (despite it being largely pointing out errors, albeit very minor points almost entirely, the kind that only judo fanatics would know or care about). Our exchange was markedly educational for me in how to deal with criticism.

A tiny anecdote, but I was impressed with the man.
