Kodokan Internet Shop is No More? Empty Kodokan Internet Shop is No More?

    Post by Y-Chromosome Tue Jan 23, 2018 9:10 am

Was just wondering what some kata DVDs would set me back in ¥.
I clicked on the old "Kodokan Internet Shop" only to be brought to a page saying it closed?

    http://www.hint.jp/kshop/en/

    Does anybody know what's up?
Are they just not selling stuff anymore or will it still be available through another distributor?
    If so who? where?

Please don't tell me I have to schlep my a$$ to Tokyo just to get some DVDs.

Yes... I know most of it is on YouTube, that's NOT my question.

I was at the Kodokan last week.  The small kiosk in the lobby is still there carrying all the usual stock.  The “Kodokan Internet Shop” was a separate, and unrelated, commercial venture.

The Kodokan DVDs are available from other sources, as are the Kusakura judogi and obi.

    Thanks for the reply.

DVDs not as easy to find as you might think.

Amazon sold out out of Kime no.
Fighting Films has Kime no but is sold out of a lot of the others.
    Hatashita doesn't even offer them.

It's starting to look like the supply is drying up.

If you've got a good line on who's still selling the DVDs it would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

Hopefully they'll get a new arrangement.

Maybe I'll try contacting the Admin Dept "indirectly" via the International Department.

I'd be curious if you called Admin if you can find someone that speaks English.

    Unlikely...

I think I've got most of the DVD's figured out.
I'll admit that "柔道寝技教科書 奥田義郎" has me intrigued.

Google translate is giving me "Judo sleeping textbooks Yoshiro Okuda" which may not be the most complimentary way to talk about the writing style of Okuda San.  Wink

I have to admit that many of my obligatory readings in university would have been readily described by the students as "sleeping textbooks".

    Tha'ts pretty good.....

Judo Newaza Subject Book by Okuda would work
寝る = to sleep; to be inclined; etc.

    Thank you for the clarification.
It seems we're still a few years off from when Google can give reliable and complete translations. We probably don't need to worry about it becoming self-aware for a few more years beyond that.

If it gets to where it can fluently translate Japanese,
then there's near no other language that it doesn't already have down cold.
This stuff is hard - I have one of Kano shihan's documents that I've been trying for a year to find someone to translate and most won't even touch them. The ones that say yes may not have a clue, I'm afraid.

Maybe he was just batty when he wrote it and no one will ever make sense of it, but I think not.
