More to the point, if I try to do it from my back. The reason is that I have short stocky legs and I just can't get it locked in properly

Have you tried turning your body so that it is at right angles (90 degrees) to him?

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm not sure what you mean.
Is it, as an example, if I have my left leg over uke's neck (trying to lock the left foot behind the right knee) I turn 90 degrees to my left and then back once the foot is locked in?

I am not saying you should put your hands behind his head as he does. He is not using a gi.

Impossible to say/help without seeing/knowing what it is you are doing. Can you post pictures ? You can cut off/blind the head/face to protect your identity and remain anonymous if you'd like.

Not bothered by identity, I just don't have any pics unfortunately.
Where I get stuck is, like I said, doing it of my back. I can get uke's arm and head tied up with my legs, but I can only get my foot up to my calf instead of locking it in behind my knee, so I'm not actually able to finish it off.
As an example, if you look at the above picture, his right foot is just about to be locked in behind his left knee. When I do it, I can't get my foot down that low, it only go as far as my calf because of my short ass legs.

Very basically, pull his arm through as far as you can and move to your right so you are 90 degrees to your opponent (if going by the pic you posted).

I understand, but that is YOUR perception. It may very well be when WE see how you do it, that we perceive OTHER things that are actually the cause of what you see and perceive.

I understand, and I also understand that it is your conclusion that the cause of all this is your short legs. But, as said, it may very well be possible that we identify that something else besides your short legs is the real cause of your problem. I have known people with very short legs to be effective sankaku specialists ... so, which underlines the point I am trying to make.

Ah ok. I see what you're saying. I'll have to try and get a video/pics then.

Ryan Hall is, of course, 50% rubber, 25% heart and 25% guts.
He does things that many of us cannot. Love watching him, though.

Years ago a sensei at the kdk told me that it wasn't the length of your legs rather the junk in the way, me I don't have that problem.
A ll I would add is that are you making the final adjustment with your hand by reaching up and pulling on the foot?

Sometimes hip mobility has a bit to do with it because your hip does have very much movement.
Im pretty sure after watching a few bjj videos (and Ryan's halls breakdown above) and then doing it yourself you should be able to figure out what your doing wrong.
My question is that this technique is rarely seen in comp judo but it is still good to know the basics of a sankaku from guard

I've had a look at some BJJ videos and there are a couple of things I will try.
I don't really care if something will work in competition or not. I just want to learn as much as I can. I want to learn "real Judo", not "competition Judo". I will do the odd comp, but that is not what is important for me.
Edit: While looking at some of the videos, I also saw the Peruvian Nectie choke. It looks fairly simple and pretty nasty. Just wondering if it is legal in Judo....

Come on, you know what I mean.
There are many techniques in Judo which can not be used in competition. It doesn't mean they are not part of Judo and should not be learned...
I'm never going to be an olympian or drive up and down the country every week to do competitions, so I would like to learn as much as possible and not be worried if I can use it in competition or not.

San-gaku-jime is one of my favourite subs from my back. If I see you on Sunday, maybe we can go through it together.

Competition judo is quite real. Certainly not imaginary !

This is going way off the rails now, but I'll try to explain again.
Yes, competition is quite real. It doesn't mean that you should just build your skills around what is legal/useful in competition does it? Unless your reason for doing Judo is mainly to do competitions of course.
Personally, that is not why I am doing Judo, so I'm not going to concentrate only on things that work in competition or are legal in competition. If it is part of Judo, I want to learn it. Everyone is jumping on the "real Judo" and "competition Judo" comments and tbh, I'm actually surprised by it. Maybe I should have said "complete Judo" or "total Judo"?
