    Hi,

We are making a giant infographic about belt ranks from 12 different martial arts.

To make sure everything is correct, I would like to ask if some of you can check the judo part and see if the belts there are correct?

    Thanks a lot,
    Mads

It depends on your country and National Federation.  Also the Shotokan karate ones are incorrect and I have never seen a kohaku belt in BJJ.  Also, aikido does not generally use coloured belts.

Guess you are right that it depends on country, etc.

Do you have a correct version of the Shotokan belts?

Aikido max. rank 6th Dan, where did you get that from ?
     Shocked
Kenji Tomiki was graded 8th Dan by Ueshiba, for example.

What do you mean by "jujutsu"? Most koryu don't use dan-i.

Here is a good compilation of the belt colors in judo in different organizations: http://judopedia.com/index.php/Ranking_System_and_Belt_Colors

seatea wrote:No red and white belt in BJJ.

I don't know if these are correct, but the wikipedia reference cited in the graphic says, "While black belt is commonly viewed as the highest rank of attainment, a practitioner who achieves the rank of 7th degree in Brazilian jiu-jitsu is recognized by a belt of alternating red-and-black. In 2013, the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation adopted the alternating red-and-white belt to acknowledge the achievement of 8th degree." So the great Judo Sensei himself has resorted to Wikipedia ... tsk tsk tsk. Wink

Sorry, I still just love that bit.

Not all Shotokan schools use the same colour system but here is one from the NGB that my son belongs to:

    9 kyu = orange
    8 kyu = red
    7 kyu = yellow
    6 kyu = green
    5 kyu = purple
4 kyu = purple with one longitudinal stripe
    3 kyu = brown
2 kyu = brown with one longitudinal stripe
1 kyu = brown with two longitudinal stripes

TBI ... you might by now be getting the impression that having one infographic ... no matter how large ... for all martial arts belt systems is a fool's errand. Even within judo, which is comparatively unified, there are dozens of systems ... maybe even a different standard for every region, maybe even between dojo.

Maybe Mr. Miyagi said it best, as he did about many things ...

Mr. Miyagi is wise man, but I will give it a try making a useful graphic anyway Smile

I noted all your great comments for the next version of the graphic. Thanks.

I think the Judo part of your graphic is close enough. There are a lot of variations based on country, organization, and it's changed over the years as well, and there are some variations for women that use to be used and still are by some people, and sometimes the red or red/white belts are optional, people who have that rank will sometimes just wear black unless it's for a special occation. You could take up the entire space of the infographic just to cover judo, and still not get it all. But the progression you have there is what I would pick if I had to pick one, maybe have some mention in the graphic about how much variation there can be.

I have a 4th dan in TKD which is correctly listed here for the International Tae Kwon Do Federation. The tenth dan is new to me because back in the day you never saw anyone get up to 8th degree hardly.

It was interesting I am a blue belt in Judo and I went to another school that does not use it, just for the kids.

Things have changed. Grandmaster V. Putin is holds a 9th dan taekwondo:

    B. Obama-sensei holds only a first dan taekwondo:
