There exists a 199-page document from the Italian judo federation that provides a history of judo kata competition.

The document is in Italian only. Statements included are generally not reference, and most kata competitors will not learn anything new from it. However, towards the back there is an appendix with overviews of several kata competitions complete with points obtained by participants, which is useful to have all in one place.
